The Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum: Understanding OCD and Related Disorders - 6/8/2012 from 9:00 am-Noon

Presentation to discuss the differences between compulsions and obsessions, medication concerns and treatment options such as CBT and exposure and response prevention (ERP). Topics for discusson will also include early childhood onset and relapse prevention, as well as exploration of related disorders such as Body Dysmorpic Disorder/Eating Disorders, Tourette's Syndrome and Trichotillomania. 3 CEU's are attached to this presentation. The Biology of Addictions: How the brain works, what happens in addiction states, - 6/22/2012 from 9:00 am-Noon

This session will review the neuroanatomy of the brain, covering the basics of cellular chemistry, organization of the brain, neurocircuitry, and physiology. Dr. Koenigsberg will cover what happens in the addicted brain, including the biology of cocaine addiction, amphetamines, nicotine, alcohol, opiates, such as narcotics, vicodin, and benzodiazepines, such as Valium, Xanax, and Klonopin. Dr. Koenigsberg will discuss the inherited genetic tendencies toward various addictions, definitions of addiction, dependency, and why certain people become addicted and others don't. Lastly, there will be discussion over various treatments for addictions, focusing on pharmacologic treatments; what they are, why they work, how they integrate with other psychotherapeutic and behavioral treatments, and how the various disciplines can work collaboratively to deliver the best care for those with addiction problems. Using Neuroscience to Change the Brain - 7/27/2012 from 9:00 am-Noon

Dr. Jayne Gardner defines emotion as energy in motion – or “E-Motion” -- and neuroscience proves that change occurs around emotion. Session participants will learn new ways to facilitate client-directed change with both positive and negative emotion, as well as what to do when a client is devoid of emotion. Dr. Gardner and a real client will demonstrate the benefits of addressing emotion, and participants will have the opportunity to practice these new techniques with a partner.

We Get Them an Hour a Week But They Have Them 24/7: Engaging Parents in the Therapy of Children and Adolescents - 9/21/2012 from 9:00-Noon

Whether you work with children in an office, school, or other setting it is often obvious that the role of the parents can be crucial to successful problem solving. Yet much of the time the parents see therapy as a place they “drop the kid off to be fixed.” This workshop emphasizes a problem- solving approach within a systemic family therapy framework. Ideas for engaging parents in a positive parenting process will be generated. Eating Disorders: Developing a Care Plan for Your Client - 11/9/2012 from 9:00 am-Noon

One in four high school girls and boys struggle with eating disorders. The mortality rate for all eating illnesses is 10-20%. Clients who present with depression or anxiety may also struggle with an eating disorder. This workshop will help practitioners diagnose and treat eating disorders as well as information on when to refer to a higher level of care. 3 CEU's are attached to this presentation.
